Assessment

Take your list of everything that makes up your network or organization and cross check it against information provided by manufacturers and vendors. Manufacturers such as Cisco, Nortel, and IBM have extensive databases online listing their products and their Y2K status. Also, provided may be information on solutions including possible patches and other fixes. You want to determine in this phase whether components are ready, and if not, whether they need to be retired, replaced, or repaired. You may also decide that now is an excellent opportunity to retire legacy systems and remove duplication (if your organization is using three different accounting programs, perhaps now is a good time to migrate to the one program that you have found to by Y2K ready).

The Internet is dependent upon communications services. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has an extensive Y2K website providing information on the readiness of communications with links to further online information.

Determine the priority of the system. If you are initiating a Y2K assessment now, consider which systems are most critical. Determine those systems that must be operational, those systems that can operate with annoying malfunctions (for example, e-mail may be sorted incorrectly - an annoying problem but one with which you can perhaps temporarily live), and those problems that you can deal with later.

At the end of this phase you want to have a detail plan of where your problems are, how you are going to respond to them, and when you are going to respond to them. January 1, 2000, is an immovable deadline. Set firm deadlines that you meet so that you can get as far through preparation as possible.

If information from the manufacturer, vendor, or communications services is not posted on the web and you are having difficulty with direct contact, think of going as a group. The best way to get a manufacturer's attention seems to be as a large group of consumers. If ISPs gather their needs together and then approach manufacturers under the umbrella of internet associations, then they might have a greater chance of getting the information and assistance that they need.

Remediation

Some have suggested that this is not a real word, that "remediation" is a word created by lawyers. Regardless of the truth of this allegation, this phase is straight forward: go and do. Take the plan that you have developed in the assessment phase and implement it.
