AssessmentThe Internet is dependent upon communications services. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has an extensive Y2K website providing information on the readiness of communications with links to further online information. Determine the priority of the system. If you are initiating a Y2K assessment now, consider which systems are most critical. Determine those systems that must be operational, those systems that can operate with annoying malfunctions (for example, e-mail may be sorted incorrectly - an annoying problem but one with which you can perhaps temporarily live), and those problems that you can deal with later. At the end of this phase you want to have a detail plan of where your problems are, how you are going to respond to them, and when you are going to respond to them. January 1, 2000, is an immovable deadline. Set firm deadlines that you meet so that you can get as far through preparation as possible. If information from the manufacturer, vendor, or communications services is not posted on the web and you are having difficulty with direct contact, think of going as a group. The best way to get a manufacturer's attention seems to be as a large group of consumers. If ISPs gather their needs together and then approach manufacturers under the umbrella of internet associations, then they might have a greater chance of getting the information and assistance that they need.
