Create a complete list of every component that makes up your network or business. If it is anything more than two copper wires and a light bulb, list it. List your critical systems. For networks, this is probably your routers, servers, switches, and modem racks. List your support systems. This might include the communications services used to reach your customers or the software used to track your subscribers or design web pages. Finally, list your auxiliary systems. This might be the security system that unlocks your doors or the air conditioners that keep your web servers from melting. You may also wish to consider the readiness of your backbone providers and any exchange points where you peer with other networks. Of course, the readiness of DNS and IP numbering services are also vital.

Remember to include not only that which is inside your network but also that which goes out to your customers. Many ISPs distribute software to their customers. Is that software Y2K ready? Netscape, Microsoft, and Eudora all have Y2K information posted up at their web sites. Many other applications, particularly freeware or shareware, have no Y2K information. You should be concerned about the readiness of the products that you are distributing.

Also think about equipment that is collocated at your POPs and software that users are running on your equipment. The potential for problems that these items pose needs also to be explored.

Included in these resources are model stickers. Many companies are going through their property and placing Y2K stickers on everything. These stickers are a simple way to make clear if any equipment has been missed and what the current status of that equipment is.
